Adventures in Cuisine, culture, and self-provisioning

ABOUT

Hi, I’m Jesse Atkins and I’ve created this blog to share my love for food, experimentation, and self-sufficiency. I have quite the mixed background under my belt, but all this spawns from my education in culinary arts and my years spent on the lines of multiple Seattle kitchens.

What got me thinking about this blog was the weekly “barbeques” at work that the guys in the autoshop and I fell into doing. As with any work BBQ, we did the “usuals”, but over time we began to tire of the smoked meats and traditional sides. We started trying to come up with themes for the BBQs. Themes became regions, which soon became countries. So as curious BBQers, we found a website that generates random countries and we went from there.

So far we have made our best efforts to reproduce the food of 37 different countries, ranging from Luxembourg to Guinea to Cook Islands. This weekly adventure has another twist to the equation, not only do we cook for 30-40 co-workers a week, but we do it in an auto shop on propane burners and charcoal barbeques.

This practice speaks to the heart of why I love food. I enjoy the community that food always brings to the table, all while expanding your personal horizons in culture, ingredients, and history.

I hope that you enjoy our weekly “travels” across the globe and my view on food, restaurants, gadgets, tools, cook books, and enjoying the bounty that nature provides us.
